Lean’s Founding Crisis and Lean’s Crisis Today

Lean thinking was born in a time of crisis at Toyota in Japan in 1950. Since that time companies in crisis have been the most successful in adopting lean thinking because the pain of the transformation is less than the pain of doing nothing.

The same is not true of crises in whole societies. Lean thinking depends on stable relations between customers, producers and their employees, and suppliers. While many lean thinkers have done wonderful work during the pandemic to devise and reconfigure processes to meet new needs, the period after early 2020 has been difficult for companies.

Emerging from the pandemic, the Lean Community faces a new kind of crisis: One of relevance. The power of our ideas was fully demonstrated more than 50 years ago and many organizations now think they have “done lean” when they have hardly started. Equally troubling, the nature and location of work is changing, loyalty of employees to organizations and organizations to employees has largely disappeared, and Industry 4.0 and other IT and AI technologies seem easier to managers than the hard work of lean transformation.
